Grown in Kenya's Central Highlands, Thunguri reflects the country's long established coffee growing tradition. The region's high elevations, fertile volcanic soils, and moderate temperatures provide favourable conditions for coffee cultivation, encouraging slower cherry maturation and the development of bright acidity and sweetness.
This lot consists of three varieties: SL28, SL34, and Batian. SL28 and SL34 were developed in Kenya and are widely recognised for their contribution to the country's distinctive coffee profile, particularly their vibrant acidity, fruit characteristics, and sweetness. Batian is a newer Kenyan variety developed for improved disease resistance and productivity while maintaining good cup quality.
Graded AA, this coffee falls within one of Kenya's larger bean size classifications. The AA designation refers primarily to screen size rather than cup quality, with beans typically retained on an 18/64-inch screen.Â
The coffee undergoes traditional washed processing, where ripe cherries are depulped to remove the outer skin and fruit. The beans are then fermented to break down the remaining mucilage, thoroughly washed, and dried to a stable moisture content.
This processing method places emphasis on the natural characteristics of the varieties and their growing environment, allowing the coffee's acidity, sweetness, and flavour clarity to remain prominent.
