Finca Juan Martin is an innovative and experimental farm managed by Banexport, dedicated to cultivating, harvesting, and processing a variety of coffee types to establish best practices for achieving optimal coffee quality. Situated in the high-altitude region of Sotara at 2050 masl, just 30 minutes from Cauca's capital, Popayan, the farm also serves as a resource and model for other coffee producers working with Banexport. Located in central-western Colombia, Cauca stretches from the Western Cordillera mountain range to the Pacific Ocean. The region's ocean winds and elevation contribute to its cooler climate, making it one of the country’s most favourable areas for coffee cultivation. The landscape features include the Popayan Plateau, numerous rivers, and the central volcanic mountain range, all of which create ideal environmental conditions for coffee growing.
At Finca Juan Martin, various maintenance tasks are performed to ensure the health and productivity of the farm. Soil conservation efforts address the challenges of the steep terrain, while allowing undergrowth to thrive helps prevent erosion. Regular evaluations of coffee crops help identify and manage pests and diseases. The farm’s management includes cleaning the tree surfaces every 75 days and clearing the space between rows with a scythe every two months.
The coffees produced at Juan Martin are cultivated, harvested, and processed with meticulous attention to quality and control. The process is tailored to meet the specific needs of each coffee variety, considering factors such as Brix level, moisture content, and desired cup characteristics.
