Clever Edison Abad, along with his wife Ana, lives and works on their farm, Las Pinas, located in the small district of San Jose de Lourdes in the northern province of San Ignacio, Peru. Clever has been involved in coffee since 2014, inspired by his father, who shared his passion for the crop. However, it wasn’t until 2019, after meeting a PECA educator, that Clever began making improvements to his process to enhance the quality of his coffee. At the farm, Clever and Ana work closely together—while Clever focuses on the coffee production, Ana handles the bookkeeping and cooks for the workers. The varieties they currently grow are Bourbon and Caturra. As the farm is their sole source of income, Clever has come to truly appreciate the value of hard work.

The washed process is favoured for its ability to highlight the characteristics of the coffee beans, allowing the terroir of each region to shine through. Many Peruvian farmers, especially those working with smallholder farms, focus on producing high-quality washed coffees to meet the growing demand for specialty coffee.
