Espresso | Bella Lulo, Ethiopia
Lulo Coffee operates in the Buku Hambela area of West Guji, where coffee is grown at elevations of around 2300 masl, among the highest in Ethiopia. The group’s recently built Hambella station has already made a strong impression, with this microlot securing 1st Place in the 2025 Ethiopian Taste of Harvest - Natural Category.
The operation connects smallholder producers across the Buku and Hambela communities, creating a collaborative system supported by shared facilities, practical training, and clearly defined quality standards. The Hambella station marks an important step forward for the region, offering purpose built drying infrastructure, organised processing systems, and improved access to high value specialty markets.
Buku Hambela’s rugged, high altitude environment plays a central role in shaping cup character. Consistently cool temperatures extend cherry development on the tree, encouraging gradual sugar accumulation and enhancing clarity and structure in the final cup. Harvest typically begins later than in many Ethiopian regions, and careful shade regulated drying supports a clean, expressive natural profile.
Harvested cherries are selectively handpicked at peak ripeness and delivered directly to the Hambella station. After flotation and manual sorting, they are dried on raised African beds under controlled shade. Drying takes place slowly across roughly 140 beds, with regular turning to promote even moisture loss. Once the target moisture level is reached, the coffee is rested on site before hulling, density separation, and final export preparation.
