Los Guacharos is a collective of independent, quality-driven small producers based in Bruselas, Southern Huila. United by a shared commitment to sustainability, the group is in the process of fully converting to organic and regenerative agriculture. Their approach is both ecological and grassroots, drawing inspiration from biodynamic principles while innovating with locally adapted techniques.
Central to their transformation is the production of their own inputs—natural fertilizers and fungicides—crafted from locally sourced materials. They've implemented gravity-powered water filtration systems using stone and sand layers to purify wastewater and prevent contamination of local water sources, ensuring a closed-loop system that protects surrounding ecosystems. One of their most remarkable innovations is Super Magro, a potent, edible biofertilizer. It is made from a blend of organic minerals, agricultural waste, molasses, bone ash, and manure, and then fermented with native microorganisms harvested from untouched forest soils. Super Magro not only boosts soil fertility and plant health but also fortifies crops against disease, offering an effective, low-cost alternative to chemical inputs.
This movement, led by producers themselves, is a powerful example of self-reliance and ecological stewardship. Los Guacharos are demonstrating that it's possible to produce exceptional coffee while healing the land—reducing dependency on external inputs, cutting costs, and revitalizing rural livelihoods from the ground up.
