This is our very first coffee from Indonesia, and it really stood out on the cupping table with its clean, distinctive profile!
This coffee is sourced from a small mill in the Pegasing district of Takengon, located in Sumatra’s renowned coffee-growing Aceh region, operated by Asman Arianto. Aceh, in northern Sumatra, is a remarkable area for coffee cultivation. The average farm size is about one hectare, with 80% of producers being women and 95% classified as smallholders.
The Asman Gayo mill supports a network of small-scale coffee growers from the Pantan Musara villages. These producers were displaced by a natural disaster several years ago, and since then, they have rebuilt their communities and farms with a renewed commitment to coffee production.
Washed coffees are uncommon in Sumatra due to the island’s consistently humid climate and frequent cloud cover. When they are produced, coffee cherries are typically brought to a central mill for processing. There, the cherries are depulped and undergo fermentation in open-air tanks for up to 36 hours before being thoroughly washed. The drying process may occur on raised beds, in solar or parabolic dryers, or on tarpaulins.
